David Ramsay Letters. 1777-1813.

The David Ramsay Letters, 1777-1813, consist of four items: a holograph copy of a letter from Ramsay to Ann S. Horne (April 9, 1777) advising her on how to recover money owed to her from a bond issued by Mr. Gadsden to Mr. Horne; a holograph copy of a letter from Ramsay to Thomas Harwood, commissioner of the Continental Loan Office in Maryland (August 13, 1885), requesting payment for unspecified goods or services; a holograph copy of Ramsay's bond (September 22, 1789) to pay the estate of Mrs. VanHorne from the estate of Mrs. Ellis "to release me from profound embarrassment"; and holograph copy of a letter from Ramsay to an unknown recipient (February 26, 1813) primarily about the sale and exchange of books, but also including a brief report on the College of Charleston, progress on his "universal history," and news of family and friends.

David Ramsay (April 2, 1749 – May 8, 1815) was an American physician, public official, and historian from Charleston, South Carolina. He was one of the first major historians of the American Revolutionary War. During the Revolution he served in the South Carolina legislature until he was captured by the British. After his release he served as a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1782 to 1783 and again from 1785 to 1786. Afterwards he served in the South Carolina legislature until retiring...
